My tuxedo cat, I inherited from the neighbor, messed up big time last Tuesday. Captain Jack was a climber and always had to know what was up there. I thought I had removed all access to my roof but Jack thought otherwise. He tried to go from the chain-link fence onto my Sun-Setter awning, about three feet out and three feet up. I caught the action on a security cam. There was nothing to sink those front claws into and he slipped off the edge of the awning and fell seven feet to the pavement below. Cats don't always land on their feet! Jack landed on his butt and took severe damage. He broke the ball of the hip joint off the femur. Very painful. The Vet recommended a ball-ectomy, said smaller animals can get by with that. The surgeon, after getting better pictures recommended to let it heal without surgery at this point. He said the break was not displaced a lot and could heal if we can keep him from jumping up and down on it. So far so good. Not bad for a 20 lb 13 year old kitty.
