I enjoy looking at fta receivers, especially the ones that are made for Europe or other countries. The Opticum HD X403p caught my attention because it appears to be an Ali3602 receiver. (The receiver case for the Opticum HD X403p appears to be similar to a S10 Openbox.) This would put the Opticum HD X403p in the same category as the Openbox S9-12, the Pansat 9500HDX, the Manhattan RS-1933, and Sat Av's new micro-hd receiver.
IMO, the Opticum HD X403p is laid out better than anything we have available here in the U.S. I got this opinion by looking at the videos of the receiver and by reading the owner's manual. How well it would actually work in the U.S. is anybody's guess. The Opticum appears to have an adjustable or user defined lnb frequency. I have been told that a user defined lnb frequency was not possible with the Ali chipset.
Looking at the Opticum videos shows other user options that we have to beg for in order to get here in the U.S. Getting an Opticum or something similar to it will not be cheap either. The Opticum HD X403p cost a little over 120 dollars but they want to tax it at 23 percent and then tack on shipping charges. After all of the fees are added, the Opticum HD X403p if it were actually available would be over 200 U.S. dollars.
I will continue to look at these receivers and hopefully I will be able to get one sometime this year. This particular Opticum seems to be out of production but maybe I can find something similar to it. In the meantime, I will continue to encourage the people that supply us with fta receivers in the U.S. to give us better receivers with more features. If it can be done across the pond, it can be done here. EB
