Octagon SF8008 Supreme

Octagon released an updated version of the SF8008 about a month ago. This updated version is called the SF8008 Supreme. The main difference from the previous SF8008 model is the Sf8008 Supreme has provisions for an internal solid state drive or hard drive.

Another difference is the tuner - demod combination. The Octagon SF8008 identifies the tuner as Silabs, si2166D. The SF8008 Supreme identifies the tuner as Avalink, AVL62X1. The SF8008 Supreme also has better wifi capability, but really, other than these items, nothing else is different.

The SF8008 Supreme needs a bit of work. The Supreme blindscan is not as good as the SF8008, and the Supreme is not capable of receiving transponders with a symbol rate less than (about) 1000. The SF8008 is capable of receiving transponders with symbol rates less than 300.

It should be noted that Octagon will be busy with other projects until around 02-20-2024. The SF8008 Supreme will probably not receive any factory type modifications or updates until at least the end of this month. From what I have seen so far, and my few days of using the SF8008 Supreme, the receiver is stable enough, but it just does not operate or function as well in some areas as the SF8008.

DREAMPORTUGAL will be selling the SF8008 Supreme, and this would be my recommend and preferred location for purchasing this receiver in the United States.

Currently the Sf8008 and the SF8008 Supreme share the same enigma2 image. These two receivers also share the same remote, which can be good or bad, depending on your application of the receiver.

I have only had the SF8008 Supreme for a few days, and have not had much free time to test it. More information about this receiver should follow in this thread. SF8008 Supreme updates and modifications are also expected, but they are not guaranteed. Do Not Buy the SF8008 Supreme unless you are happy with the way it performs now because factory updates for it may never come.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, I would give the Sf8008 Supreme a 7. Yes, there are things that need work, but overall, it is just an updated version of the SF8008.

The SF8008 and the SF8008 Supreme identify as the same receiver. The SF8008 and SF8008 Supreme both identify as SF8008. This can be very confusing when trying to transfer files. Hopefully identification will be fixed by Octagon.

Shown below are a recent blindscan of 117w between the SF8008 and SF8008 Supreme. Scan logs are also attached. Some receiver menus have been modified to show the receiver model. This was done to remove confusion as to which receiver you are looking at.

The SF8008 logged 70 transponders. The SF8008 Supreme logged 68.

The SF8008 Supreme has the ability to show signal below lock without any driver modifications. There are some enigma2 modifications that have to be made to allow this receiver to show signal below lock, but no driver modifications are needed. Other receivers such as Edision MIO 4K's need both driver modifications and enigma modifications to show signal below lock.

Being able to see the signal below lock is useful for dish aligning, and can also give an idea as to how much more signal is needed to view a certain transponder. I consider having the signal below lock feature a Plus, but I do not need it very often. It is a very nice feature to have though when needed!

AN internal hard drive (SSD) makes the receiver experience better, and is needed for movies, file loading, and anything else you want to store. IMO, if you are gonna buy storage space, get something with a good reputation. I purchased a Kingston Terabyte stick and installed it into the receiver.

Instructions on installing additional storage internally is included with the receiver. Installing the Kingston stick shown below took a few minutes, but was no more difficult than installing ram into an older computer.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with one being the worst and ten being the best, I would rate the Supreme as an 8 after this SSD installation. We are on our way to having a good FTA DX type receiver.

The SF8008 Supreme seems to find too many 16 and 32 apsk transponders on Ku band. I took some time earlier and compared the blindcsans of 87w and 103w that are shown below with a friend using TBS5925. The scans shown below were comparable to the 5925 TBS card, so everything is OK on the Ku scanning. It should be noted though The SF8008 Supreme does not currently find much of anything below 1000SR.

Currently, The lowest symbol rate transponder that the SF8008 Supreme can resolve is 833 on 117w. There is an active transponder on 87w ku that has a symbol rate of 593. The SF8008 can scan and play the radio channels on this transponder, but the SF8008 Supreme cannot.

Myu experience with Avalink is it will work down to around a 500 symbol rate with modifications, but cannot go lower than that. The Edision MIO receivers also have Avalink and 833 symbol rate is as low as they will go without modifications to the Avalink driver. SO IMO the Octagon salesman is selling and is not being realistic about the low symbol rate capability of the SF8008 Syupreme. Let's see if they modify the driver.

Don't really think they do actual live testing to see if the units meet the specs. Most likely they quote the specs from the data sheets supplied by the component designers.

Octagon or anyone else that makes non-commercial fta equipment does not care. Specs mean absolutely Nothing as we see here with the low symbol rate. Whatever the specs show, the receiver or equipment should be capable of, or able to meet advertised specs. But for us with the homeowner fta equipment, specs are eye candy.

Octagon may not have the equipment needed to test the low symbol rate, but other people do. Octagon simply does not care IMO. It's all about selling the receiver and nothing else really matters as long as the receiver is being sold.
