    I expect to put up another c band dish sometime this spring, and I decided to purchase a Geosat C2 pll lnb for use on this new dish antenna. The Geosat C2 lnb was chosen for this dish project because I needed a dual lnb with a warranty. It will be a few more weeks before this new dish system is installed, so I decided to mount the Geosat C2 on my main c band dish and see how it performs.

    I found the Geosat C2 lnb to be light in weight which allows for easier mounting when compared to the heavier Titanium pll lnb. The useless heat sink for the Titanium lnb weighs almost half as much as the entire Goesat C2 lnb. The extra weight of the useless Titanium heat sink also makes the lnb unbalanced in the feed horn or scalar ring.

    My first impressions of receiving satellite signals with the Geost C2 lnb are very good. The Geosat C2 seems to perform very well, and may be a bit better than my Pauxis lnb which is not a pll type of lnb. The Geosat C2 will be allowed to stay on the dish for awhile so I can make sure that it is adjusted for maximum signal. Then I will test the performance of the Geosat C2 against my Pauxis dro lnb, and if possible, against the Titanium C2 pll lnb.

    The Geosat C2 pll lnb weighs only 7 ounces. I think this lnb weighs the least of any dual c band lnbf that I have installed. Light weight means less tension or torque is needed for the feed horn or scalar ring screws. Light weight also allows for an overall easier installation. EB

    Looking forward to your future reviews for this lnbf, I might change my psi x2 this Spring. The esx242 is also extremely light.

    So now we have 3 scans of a satellite using 3 different lnbs. Granted they were done at different times, but I think if you look at them, you will find they are pretty consistent with each other.

    Some things need to be clarified:

    A DRO lnb has a tuning slug. With all other things created equal in the manufacturing, such as type of lnb case used, the DRO lnb will weigh a bit more than a pll lnb. The DRO lnb will weigh a bit more because of the tuning slug for the l.o. frequency.

    A PLL lnb does not have a tuning slug for the l.o. frequency. so it will weigh less, plus less manufacturing time will be spent tuning the PLL lnb.

    PLL or Phase Locked Loop Does Not have any additional signal amplification built into it. Your received signal from the satellite is not going to increase just because the lnb is a PLL type instead of a DRO type.

    PLL lnbs should be expected to perform better on narrow satellite signals, but overall you can expect similar performance from a DRO or PLL lnb IF all other things are equal in the satellite antenna system, and IF both lnbs are healthy and of equal design.

    DRO lnbs will have a disadvantage on the l.o. frequency drift because of the tuning slug. Vibrations due to wind or other acts of nature can cause the tuning slug in the DRO lnb to move. A lot of people have DRO lnbs that are 10-20 years old that are in good working condition. I would say this is the exception though and not the norm.

    I arranged to get the Titanium C2 lnb back for a few days, so the plan will be to test the Geosat C2 directly against the Titanium C2. The tests should consist of scanning the satellites at 116.8W and at 55.5W, once in the morning and once in the evening over a period of days. Doing it this way allows for a complete picture of how the lnbs actually compare. EB

    The Geosatpro C2 is doing a very good job, so I took the time to list the results of a 55.5W scan on 1-30-2015 in the evening.
    56 Transponders were logged in the scan, and that is the highest I remember seeing on this satellite. Weather conditions probably favored a better than average scan, with cool temperatures, partly cloudy sky, and very little wind. I will make sure the Titanium C2 lnb gets at least one scan under the same conditions.

    Logging or locking a large number of transponders is nice, and makes for excellent sales material. But to me, it does not mean that much. I think it is more important how a lnb performs over time, and over a wide range of signals and satellites instead of how many transponders it can lock on a single satellite in exceptional weather.

    Another thing to remember is transponders can be turned on and off. This makes it even harder to determine if a lnb is doing an exceptional job, or if it is just being tested in a favorable moment.

    Finished scanning with the Geosat C2 lnb. The Titanium lnb is on the dish and a good amount of time was spent adjusting it.
    Some test scans were made on Saturday night with the Titanium lnb. These scans show a drop in found transponders, but the missed transponders may be turned off. Let's see what happens with the Titanium C2 over the next couple of days.

    SNR numbers are down a bit with the Titanium C2 when compared to the Geosat C2. It should be noted that the Titanium C2 SNR exceeds the Geosat C2 SNR on some transponders, but the Titanium is down in SNR more than it is up. I doubt you would notice this SNR drop much while watching satellite tv.

    The Titanium lnb appears to be having problems with my antenna system. I have a 3X4 multiswitch installed so I can feed 4 receivers with a dual lnb.
    I have not had any problems for two years with this system using the Pauxis dro lnb. Now I have to turn all other fta receivers off that are connected to this system when scanning with the Titanium lnb. If I do not turn the other receivers off, the Titanium lnb fails to scan many transponders!

    The Titanium lnb has been removed. Apparently it is having problems. I reinstalled the Pauxis and the transponder count went up immediately. I will run the Pauxis for a while, then might try a reinstall of the Titanium C2 after that.
